What is USM GeoSensing USM?
GeoSensing USM is a digital platform dedicated to showcasing the education, research, field activities, and scientific contributions of the Geophysics Programme, School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
The platform highlights how geophysical knowledge and Earth observation technologies are used to understand the Earth system, from the shallow subsurface to the ocean, atmosphere, and climate. Through teaching, research, field training, industry engagement, and community outreach, GeoSensing USM reflects the programme’s commitment to producing graduates with strong scientific foundations, technical skills, and real-world problem-solving capabilities.
Our work covers a broad range of geoscience and environmental applications, including near-surface geophysics, seismic and electrical methods, remote sensing, oceanography, meteorology, climate variability, natural hazards, and environmental monitoring. These areas support the growing need for data-driven approaches in understanding Earth processes and addressing challenges related to sustainability, climate change, disaster risk, and resource exploration.
GeoSensing USM also serves as a platform to document student learning experiences, research outputs, fieldwork, laboratory activities, workshops, public engagement, and collaborations with academic, government, and industry partners. By bringing these activities together in one space, the website aims to increase visibility, encourage knowledge sharing, and promote geophysics as an important discipline for understanding and protecting our planet.
At its core, GeoSensing USM represents the spirit of learning through observation, measurement, analysis, and interpretation.
We use physics to understand the Earth.
